Universal Pictures has given the green light to a Kick-Ass sequel, but the original films’s director Matthew Vaughn will only write and produce the film, not direct, reports Heat Vision.

Instead, Vaughn has “hand-picked” Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down) to direct the project instead.

Vaughn has written the script for the follow-up, which adapts not only the Kick-Ass 2 comic book storyline but also the Hit-Girl spin-off series that goes on sale next month. The Hit-Girl storyline will be the first act of the movie.

The original Kick-Ass film, which was distributed by Lionsgate and self-financed by Vaughn, was made for $30 million and earned $96.2 million worldwide in 2010.

The film is expected to start shooting in September starts with Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse all rumoured to be reprising their roles.

Live Action Akira Put On Hold For Downscaling

8 Jan

Budget needs to be slashed by another $20-30 million, allegedly

The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that pre-production in Vancouver on the American live action version of Akira has shut down, pending yet another rethink on the the budget.

The project, which has been plagued with problems and setbacks over the past couple of years, now faces yet another budget cut, with Warners apparently hoping that director can shave another $20-30 million off the $90 million budget. Akira has already suffered from a previous drastic downscaling: when Albert Hughes was set to direct, the proposed budget was allegedly a massive $160 million. Looks like Warners have serious doubt about the film’s pulling power – both in terms of audience and attracting star names. So far only Tron: Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund is officially attached, and he’s hardly a big box office draw.

Akira has gone through various rewrites, with Harry Potter’s Steve Kloves the lates person to tackle the script, following versions by Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby and Gary Whitta. Looks like somebody will have to be brought in to perform another streamlining operation.

Kristen Stewart Offered Akira Role?

16 Nov

She may be Kei

She’s usually found getting all moody over vampire beau Edward in the Twilight films, but Kristen Stewart has been establishing herself elsewhere with a mix of indie movies and the upcoming Snow White And The Huntsman. Now Warners thinks she might just be right for the cast of Akira, sending out an offer for her to play Kei.

The long-gestating film finds bike gang leader Kaneda (Garrett Hedlund, provided he too locks down a deal) dealing with what happens when his best friend Tetsuo is the subject of a government experiment – one that threatens to unlock the lad’s frightening psychic potential and may end up destroying an entire city.

Stewart is being courted to play Kei, a young medium who falls for Kaneda. If she does end up joining the cast, she may appear alongside Helena Bonham Carter and Gary Oldman, who are also in talks. While her Twilight pedigree will probably cause strong reactions to this news, both positive and negative, it’s worth remembering that she has a long history in indie movies and is not inherently uncool.

Director Jaume Collet-Sera is looking to kick off filming on Akira in March.

Tron: Legacy star offered lead in live-action Akira

5 Nov

It’s Official

Bumps in the road aside, that live-action Akira adaptation seems to be heading in the right direction now, and it may soon have a star. After lots of speculation that he was in the running, we’re now hearing that Tron: Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund has an official offer to star in the flick.

For two weeks now, word on the street has been that director Jaume Collet-Sera (Unknown) wanted Hedlund for the lead role of Kaneda in his Americanized flick, and now Twitch is reporting that the powers that be at Warner Bros. have agreed and delivered an offer for Hedlund’s consideration.

Hedlund could still turn down the role, but it could be his next big career bump, and given that Helena Bonham Carter and Gary Oldman have also reportedly been offered roles, it would definitely be a tough thing for a rising young star to refuse.

Not bad progress for a flick that not too long ago seemed like it might never happen. Budget cuts and a new director seem to have saved Akira.

Tv Review : Futurama – season 6 episode 26 ‘Reincarnation’ : season finale

12 Sep

6.26 Reincarnation

There’s a real sense of the epic as the current season of Futurama comes to an end. And when I say ‘epic’, I don’t mean it in the rather overused and redundant way we get constantly these days (bloody young people). I mean truly awe inducing and magnificent.

Reincarnation (originally written as the show’s final finale) features a rare pre-title sequence, featuring an introduction from God, no less. More shockingly, however, the titles dispense with the tagline gag for the episode; simply stating ‘Reincarnation’ under the Futurama logo. This. Is. Serious.

The episode uses the Anthology of Interest model. using three separate segments though this time the stories are all linked by the appearance of a Diamondium comet. Up first is Colorama, a Max Fleischer pastiche that is so jam-packed with gags that you’ll be coming back to this nugget time and again.

I shan’t spoil the many jokes for you but it evokes hilariously the work of the Fleischer studio, with some neat references to Betty Boop and Popeye, whilst aping the animator’s style throughout. Certainly some of the funniest Futurama moments ever (not to mention clever) are featured in this six-minute story.

Next up is Future Challenge 3000, an 8-bit tribute to 80s video/arcade games. It’s an extremely cleverly constructed piece that will please old-skool gamers no end with a plethora of familiar sound effects, visual nods and one-liners (always good to hear a Galaxians reference). For me, however, the gags weren’t as strong, more smirkful and knowing than true hearty laughs. Though some rather dirty suggestions from Leela will raise more than an eyebrow.

The final sequence is titled Action Delivery Force and is an anime parody, with the crew of Planet Express characterised and animated in the Japanese style. Particular influences evident are the excellent Battle of the Planets (or Gatchaman, as some call it) and Voltron. The theme tunes get a welcome outing here in a terrific battle scene with an alien race who communicate through dance.

Like the first segment, it’s insanely clever and beautifully referenced but also delivers the laughs thick and fast (as do Fry and Co. with every sentence in true anime fashion). Settling down to a full episode in this style would not be an unpleasant experience.

And just to show off how bally clever these writers are (apart from delivering laughs by the dozen) they’ve neatly linked the three stories with some remarkable brainwork. Each medium used is inadequate for the each segment’s resolution: a new colour is created in Colorama (a black and white cartoon); Future Challenge 3000 features the answer to life, the universe and everything but is too low resolution to display it to the audience; and the dance moves in Action Delivery Force are too quick for us to appreciate as the anime’s frame rate is too slow. That is clever at work!

Anyway, regardless of how intelligent Futurama is (and can be), the season 6 finale ends demonstrating that the show is as strong as ever. Reincarnation includes some of the finest moments in its history and is candidate for best episode ever. Here’s to Season 7 !
