‘Dexter’ renewed for two more seasons by Showtime !

18 Nov

Showtime has picked up its signature drama series for a seventh and eighth season of 12 episodes each, the cable channel announced Friday (Nov. 18). The pickup comes after the cable channel finalized a new deal with star Michael C. Hall to return for two more years.

“‘Dexter’s’ enormous success is a real tribute to the great achievements of its cast, producers, and the powerhouse performance of Michael C. Hall,” Showtime Entertainment president David Nevins says. “The series is bigger than it’s ever been in its sixth season, both in terms of audience and its impact on the cultural landscape. Together with Michael, the creative team on the show has a very clear sense of where they intend to take the show over the next two seasons and, as a huge fan, I’m excited to watch the story of Dexter Morgan play out.”

The current season of “Dexter,” which wraps up in December, has been the show’s most-watched so far, with 5.1 million people tuning in each week (counting multiple airings, DVR use and on-demand viewing). First-run episodes have improved on the previous week’s ratings in each of the last five weeks.

Hall has earned four consecutive Emmy nominations for playing the crime-scene analyst/serial killer of bad people and won a Golden Globe for the role in 2010.

Season 7 of “Dexter” will go into production next year and will likely debut in its customary fall window.

Showtime has renewed Dexter for a sixth season, reports Deadline.

The suspense drama, starring Michael C. Hall as the titular character, has performed well for the cable network this season, with the tenth episode attracting the second-highest audience in the series’ history – up 43% from the fifth season premiere.

David Nevins, President of Entertainment for Showtime, said: “To grow its audience so significantly in its fifth season is an enormous accomplishment by this amazing cast and crew. This is the easiest decision I’ve made since I got to Showtime.”

The season finale will air on Sunday, December 12th in the US.

Julie Benz will reportedly return for the upcoming fifth season of Dexter.

Benz’s character Rita, who was married to Dexter (Michael C Hall), was murdered by the Trinity Killer in the last season finale.

However, Entertainment Weekly reports that Benz has signed up to play the role again in future episodes.

Executive producer Chip Johannessen explained that she will not be coming back from the dead and said: “We’re not going to do some ghostly thing with her.”

Fellow executive producer Sara Colleton added: “We reserve those for Harry [James Remar]. If you have too many things like that it becomes gimmicky.”

A representative for the programme’s network Showtime refused to reveal details about Benz’s role but explained that Rita’s return will “help Dexter deal with his newfound feelings of loss and grief – emotions he has never really felt before”.

The fifth season of Dexter is scheduled to premiere in September.

Dexter’s executive producer Sara Colleton has revealed that the fifth season will focus on atonement.

In the season four finale, Dexter (Michael C Hall) murdered the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow) but was too late to save his wife Rita (Julie Benz).

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Colleton explained that the new season will begin seconds after Dexter discovered Rita’s body.

“The theme of the season is atonement,” she added. “Dexter has to get in touch with things he never felt before – guilt, sorrow, self-forgiveness. There is blowback from his reckless behaviour.”

Colleton also revealed that the FBI will suspect Dexter of Rita’s murder, saying: “Who is the first suspect when a wife dies? The husband. And where was Dexter [on the night] she was killed? Out on a boat disposing of a body [Trinity's] – that’s not a very good alibi.”
