Game of Thrones’ executive producers have released a list of new faces we can expect to pop up in season three…

Not only are we getting an extra ten minutes in Sunday’s season two finale, but showrunners David Benioff and D.B Weiss have kindly supplied us with a list of new characters we can expect to welcome for Game of Thrones’ third series.

Season three is to be adapted from part or all of George R.R. Martin’s A Storm of Swords, though readers of the Song of Ice and Fire books will notice that some on the list below make their first appearance in the second novel, A Clash of Kings. The following new names have been confirmed to be on their way in season three:

– Mance Rayder: We’ve heard about him all season. A former member of the Night’s Watch who became the “King Beyond the Wall,” the leader of the Wildlings.

– Daario Naharis: A confident and seductive warrior.

– Jojen Reed; Meera Reed: A teenage brother and sister duo with special insights.

– Edmure Tully: A brash young member of the Tully family.

– Ser Brynden Tully (The Blackfish): Catelyn’s uncle.

– Lady Selyse Florent: Stannis Baratheon’s wife.

– Shireen: Stannis’ daughter.

– Olenna Redwyne (The Queen of Thorns): Margaery Tyrell’s sharp-witted grandmother.

– Beric Dondarrion: A skilled knight who is the leader of the outlaw group Brotherhood Without Banners.

– Thoros of Myr: A red priest who follows the same religion as Melisandre.

– Tormund Giantsbane: A Wildling raider.

It’s not an exhaustive list, according to Benioff and Weiss, as that would spoil some of the fun, but it does give us plenty to be going on with.

Armie Hammer, Garrett Hedlund and Taylor Kitsch are amongst those on the shortlist to play Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire…

Earlier this week, the rumour that Robert Pattinson was in the running to play Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire seemed to have been put to bed. But it did beg the question: if it wasn’t Pattinson playing the role, then who would it be?

Well, we’re getting closer to an answer. With the shoot set to start towards the end of the summer, Lionsgate has been working on the casting, and the shortlist apparently consists of Armie Hammer (The Social Network, Mirror Mirror), Taylor Kitsch (John Carter, Battleship) and Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy). According to E! Online, the decision could be made over the casting within the next week (and, of course, it may end up being someone not on that list). We’ll certainly keep you posted. Of those three, might Armie Hammer be the best shout, we wonder?

Francis Lawrence is directing The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (which is now the film’s official title), and it’s due in cinemas in November 2013.

HBO has announced that the season two finale of Game Of Thrones, “Valar Morghulis” will be around 10 minutes longer the usual running time for an episode of the show, clocking in at 64 minutes.

If you’ve seen the penultimate episode , you’ll probably know why – we won’t spoil it here in case you’ve still yet to see it, but let’s just say that there’s some fall-out that needs to be dealt with.

Alfre Woodard will return for the fifth season of True Blood, it has been confirmed.

The Academy Award-nominated actress will return to the HBO fantasy series as Ruby Jean Reynolds, the schizophrenic mother of Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis).

Reynolds was last seen in the third season, where she was taken back to hospital after threatening her son and Jesus (Kevin Alejandro) with a knife.

Woodard was nominated for the ‘Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series’ award at the 2011 Emmys for her True Blood role.

She will appear in the fifth and sixth episodes of the fifth season, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The fifth season of True Blood premieres on HBO on June 10 and on FX in the UK later this year.

Law & Order: SVU star Christopher Meloni will be among a group of new characters in the latest season.

The fifth series of Primeval is to finally air on ITV1.

The sci-fi drama’s most recent run will premiere on June 16, producers Impossible Pictures have confirmed.

The show was renewed for two more series by ITV and digital channel Watch in 2009.

Under the joint agreement, ITV had first broadcast rights on Primeval’s fourth series, with Watch then being able to air the episodes at a later date.

Watch would then air the fifth series first – which it did between May and June 2011 – with ITV having second run rights.

The six latest episodes – starring Andrew-Lee Potts, Hannah Spearritt and Ciarán McMenamin – will now air on ITV1 over a year after their first digital broadcast.

The future of the original Primeval is currently unclear with no further episodes being commissioned since the 2009 revival. However, in May 2011, Potts (Connor) told Digital Spy that he and co-star Spearritt (Abby) were unsure of their future with the programme.

“Primeval deserves to carry on, and I hope it does,” he said. “As for mine and Hannah’s involvement in that, we’re not entirely sure.”

A new Primeval spinoff – subtitled New World – was officially announced in February 2012. The “older, darker and scarier” series has filmed in Vancouver and will be broadcast on Watch in late 2012.

It is currently unclear if ITV will transmit Primeval: New World.

He refused to show us an Alien in the sensational trailers (‘Aaaaah! Aaaaah!’), he wouldn’t even use the word ‘Alien’ in the title, but Ridley Scott gives us one almost immediately in Prometheus’ opening scene. Not the kind you’re expecting, mind. 


Breathtaking stereoscopic shots swoop across a gorgeous landscape. Black mountains wreathed in volcanic steam, glassy lakes and, at the top of a crashing waterfall, a tiny man. Only he’s not tiny. He’s not a man. Like an extra-terrestrial Greek titan, this tower of muscle flexes inside smooth pale skin. And then dies.


Creation and destruction are the twin-burners of Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof’s ambitious screenplay, which bricks up an epic new mythology around the tantalisingly unexplained image of the space jockey in Scott’s original 1979 space-horror. 



It’s 2093, three decades before Ellen Ripley’s first bug-hunt, and we’re aboard another starship funded by sinister mega-corporation Weyland Industries. Joining the 17-man crew are scientist couple Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Charlie (Logan Marshall-Green), who’ve discovered that etchings from every ancient civilisation on Earth have all left clues to the same faraway planet.

Their mission: to discover where we come from – and why.

Once they touch down, we’re on familiar ground: the crew begin exploring a giant hollow labyrinthine of tunnels and, uh-oh, something sticky leaking from countless cylinders stored deep within one of the chambers…

Game over, man, game over. But if we’re been here before, Prometheus inhabits the host mythology without becoming suffocated by it. Pulling its own twists on many of the queasier elements of the quadrilogy, it tightens its grip slowly, making us wait until what’s out there gets in here. 


Proving how wasted she was in Sherlock Holmes: Game Of Shadows, Rapace is a gentle, driven proto-Ripley who mirrors nicely with Charlize Theron’s glacial mission leader Meredith Vickers, strutting tightly in a witty silver-grey suit.

But it’s the brilliantly constructed character of Prometheus’ android – sorry, synthetic person – David (Michael Fassbender) that provides much of the movie’s dramatic frisson. We first discover him alone on the ship, spinning a basketball on his fingertip, bleaching his hair and – in the movie’s loveliest invention – studying Peter O’Toole’s performance in Lawrence Of Arabia. 


Owning every scene he steps into, Fassbender once again proves a truly magnetic screen presence, balancing Bishop’s even-mannered likeability with Ash’s unsettling lack of empathy.

Now if only they’d cast O’Toole himself as Peter Weyland instead of Guy Pearce, unrecognisable behind melty-faced prosthetics.

“I didn’t think you had it in you,” quips David, in a wry moment that Prometheus could have used more of.

Truth be told, the rest of the cast – Idris Elba’s effortlessly sardonic captain aside – are bug food for the film’s skin-crawlingly effective antagonists. Ooze trickles, tentacles coil and gore splatters, not least in the movie’s standout scene, involving Noomi Rapace and some desperate surgery.


Back in the sci-fi genre for the first time since 1982’s Blade Runner, director Ridley Scott has always been more at home with Big Spectacle than Big Ideas. And sure enough, once people start dying, Prometheus’ ambitious thematic payload goes straight out of the airlock.

But Scott’s movie is flawlessly designed, with the beautiful 3D cinematography contrasting the clean white futurism of Prometheus’ interiors with the black corporeal surfaces of the alien catacombs.



It might not pack the unbearable menace or blazing horror of the saga’s first two movies, but it utterly eclipses the last two. It’s exciting, tense and fully impregnated for sequels…

Just when all the hype had seemed to quieten down concerning the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch’s character, Simon Pegg has come out and denied that Khan will be the villain in Star Trek 2.

Earlier this month TrekMovie claimed to have received confirmation that Cumberbatch would be playing the intergalactic tyrant, Khan Noonien Singh, but Pegg has subsequently dismissed that as pure speculation.

“It’s not Khan,” reveals Pegg. “That’s a myth. Everyone’s saying it is, but it’s not. I think people just want to have a scoop. It annoys me – it’s beyond the point to just ferret around for spoilers all the time to try to be the first to break them.”

That sounds pretty conclusive to us. However, rather than worrying about the identity of the villain, Pegg seems more concerned about the pressure of living up to the first film.

“This time we had the benefit of being able to hit the ground running,” he explains. “We spent some time in the first one re-establishing the characters. Now we have a fully set-up group of people that we can just get on with straight away. So it ups the ante slightly, and we’ve all had more to do.”

“It’s totally incumbent on us to not drop the ball,” he continues. “It would be a disaster if it wasn’t as good as – or better than – the first one.” Star Trek 2 opens in the UK on 17 May 2013.

Iron Man 3’s collection of villains appears to be tieing together, with Latino Review revealing some new plot details courtesy of a source at Marvel Studios. Naturally there are potential spoilers ahead, so read on with caution.

First and foremost is the apparent confirmation that Ben Kingsley will be playing The Mandarin, Iron Man’s seminal comic-book nemesis and the scientific genius who eventually gets his hands on the mystical ten rings.

However, while Mandarin’s status in the comic-books is as Iron Man’s most nefarious enemy, in this film he’ll be playing a supporting role to Guy Pearce’s primary antagonist, the scientist Aldrich Killian. Killian is the man responsible for creating the Extremis project which he will use to power hisnew “Extremis Army”.

Said army is where new cast additions James Badge Dale and Ashley Hamilton come in. They will play Coldblood and Firepower respectively, a pair of super-powered individuals who derive their powers from Killian’s pioneering technology.

The final reveal is that the Patriot Armour, a cross between Iron Man’s suit and Captain America’s design aesthetic, will make an appearance in the new film. How exactly it will figure in the story remains to be seen, but leaked on-set images have shown that it will play a role somewhere along the line.

Plenty to digest there then, and plenty of time to do so, as Iron Man 3 will open in the UK on 3 May 2013.
